Major General Robert David Shadley, United States Army (Retired), served in key leadership positions at Alliant Techsystems, Inc. (ATK) from 1 June 2000 to 10 August 2007. He concluded his career at ATK as Senior Vice President, Force Protection, Advanced Weapons Division. He served as a senior mentor providing logistics and leadership subject matter expertise to the U. S. Army Combined Arms Support Command and the U. S. Army Battle Command Training Program from August 2007 to September 2010. Major General Shadley currently provides acquisition and logistics advice to businesses in the aerospace and defense sector. He also speaks and writes on the subject of eradicating the virulence of sexual assault in both the military and civilian organizations.
Major General Shadley retired from active duty on May 31, 2000, following a distinguished 33-year military career. He was commissioned in January 1965 and entered active duty in June 1967. Following attendance at the Ordnance Officer Basic Course at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and the Missile Maintenance Officer Course at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, he was assigned as a Project Officer in the Unit Training Command at the United States Army Missile and Munitions Center and School until June 1968. He continued at Redstone Arsenal with various assignments, including commanding the 249th Ordnance Detachment.
He is the author of the non-fiction book "The GAMe: Unraveling a Military Sex Scandal" which documents leadership in a crisis and doing the right thing to protect young soldiers from sexual predators.
He departed Redstone in May 1969 to the United States Army Pacific Command's 86th Ordnance Detachment in Japan, where he served as its commanding officer until August 1970.
In December 1970, Major General Shadley arrived in Vietnam to join the Ordnance Advisory Division of the United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. From November 1972 to December 1975, following the Ordnance Officer Advanced Course, he served at the United States Army Materiel Command. From 1975 to 1978, he attended numerous schools, including the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the British Royal Armour School in England.
In 1978, Major General Shadley began an assignment first as Maintenance Officer, and later as Chief, Maintenance Branch, III Corps G4 at Fort Hood, Texas, and then as Materiel Officer, 124th Maintenance Battalion, 2d Armored Division.

He returned to the Continental United States in 1983 as Commander, 801st Maintenance Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Following attendance at the Army War College, he reported to Washington, D.C., to serve in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Department of the Army.
In July 1990, Major General Shadley assumed command of the Division Support Command, 1st Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM. In 1992, he reported to the United States Army Materiel Command as the Executive Officer to the Commanding General. He was reassigned as Director for Logistics, U.S. Atlantic Command, in March 1994. In August 1995, Major General Shadley became the Chief of Ordnance, the Commanding General, U.S. Army Ordnance Centers and Schools, and the Deputy Commanding General for Ordnance at the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. In July 1997, he assumed the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics at Headquarters, United States Army Forces Command, in Fort McPherson, Georgia.
Major General Shadley has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Alabama Distinguished Service Medal. Major General Shadley received his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue University. He also holds a master's of military art and science degree from the United States Army Command and General Staff College. He is a graduate of the Program Management Course at the Defense Systems Management College and the U.S. Army War College.
In 1996, Major General Shadley was inducted into the Purdue University ROTC Hall of Fame, and received the Outstanding Industrial Engineer Award from the Purdue University School of Industrial Engineering in 1999. He was inducted into the U. S. Army Ordnance Corps Hall of Fame in 2003. He served as the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for the State of Minnesota from 2003 to 2005. In 2004, Major General Shadley received the Distinguished Engineer Alumnus Award from Purdue University and the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Management from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He received the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the Department of the Army in 2005. In August 2007 he was appointed the Honorary Colonel of the Regiment for the 1st Sustainment Brigade. Major General Shadley was awarded the General Brehon B. Somervell Medal of Excellence in 2009. He was inducted into the Circleville High School Achievement Hall of Fame in 2012. He is married to Camilla Vance of New York and they reside on her horse farm, Dark Waterspoon Stables, in Vass, NC.
